Solar-powered 'treehouse' has 360-degree views, Wi-Fi and beer

The ultimate off-the-grid pad is here and don't worry, it has Wi-Fi, beer and plenty of options for mood lighting

Jono Williams, a plastics engineer and graphic designer by day, wanted to build an elevated room with a view, but wasn't convinced that a standard treehouse would suffice. So instead he built his own tree-like structure, one that could sit virtually anywhere in the world not just where large trees grow

His creation, appropriately dubbed "The Skysphere," is a circular single room accessible by a ladder in its base. The structure is located in Linton, New Zealand, and provides its guests with endless views of the surrounding countryside. Besides the sleek design and pretty views, the room is completely powered by solar panels, which is necessary for all of its gadgets. Read more...

Bacteria resistant to antibiotics may be deadlier and harder to treat

Superbug
Feed-twFeed-fb

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria may be tougher superbugs than previously thought: Not only are these bacteria harder to treat, they appear to be "fitter" in general, meaning they survive better in the host and cause more deadly infections, a new study suggests.

The findings go against the prevailing view in medicine that when bacteria acquire resistance to drugs, they become less "fit" in some way, for example, they spread less easily. Although scientists have assumed this is true, evidence supporting this view is limited, the researchers said.

In the new study, the researchers examined the effect of genes on antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, bacteria that cause lung infections. Read more...

Why magenta doesn't appear in the rainbow

Steve Mould's colored flashlights (sometimes called "coloured torches" in distant lands) are useful props in this excellent 5-minute lecture on color mixing. I learned that magenta is not a color. Rather, it is the absence of green.

Prepare to have your heart shattered — and then pieced back together

Two dogs escaped being euthanized after a photo of the pair hugging went viral on Facebook. The Angels Among Us Pet Rescue organization in northern Georgia posted a heartbreaking image of Kala and Keira hugging behind the bars of a shelter, just hours before they were scheduled to be killed

Along with the image, the caption included a message that could bring any animal lover to tears.

I'm Kala. This is Keira. We're so scared in here. The people working in the shelters see how scared we are but just told each other that today is our deadline. We have to have someone rescue us or we'll be “next.” Keira is black and not a “real boxer,” just a mix. She's so brave and tells me it will be okay no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave too but I don't know if I can be. Can you see our faces. Keira knows what will happen. You can see it in her eyes. She's putting on a brave face for sure but I can feel her heart beating fast while I'm clinging to her. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. Read more...

We tested how hot male models were at fashion week — literally

New York's first fashion week for men was pretty hot. Or was it?

We found out using a FLIR One thermal camera for iPhone.

By simply pointing the thermal camera at models, we could literally "see" how hot (or not) they were

We asked models at the Orley hair show how "hot" they felt backstage. Though most said they felt hot underneath their borrowed clothes, none were above the normal body temperature of 98.6 degrees.

An Australian visual artist has launched a Pozible campaign to attract the attention of diverse women and their supporters.

The Pozible fundraiser, started by Adelaide artist Amy Herrmann, asks for financial support for her art project titled: "Underneath we are ..."

It hopes to portray women in a different light from the all-too-common depiction in media, advertising and most visual forms in society.

"Underneath, we are ... young, fat, tall, we are trans, skinny, disabled, we are mothers, we are short, scarred and old," the campaign reads. "We are the many labels that society has created for us. But what if I told you that underneath, underneath it all ... We are women." Read more...
